Accessibility

I want everyone to be able to read about the workbook, buy it, and take part in a group or a gathering, whatever device or assistive technology they use. This page says what I've done, what I know still falls short, and how to reach me if something gets in your way.

What this site aims for

The pages I control are built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. In practice that means:

  • Text you can read: body text of at least 16 pixels, and a contrast of at least 4.5 to 1 between text and background.
  • Real headings in a sensible order, so a screen reader can move through a page the way a sighted reader skims it.
  • A text description on every meaningful image, including the book's cover and sample pages.
  • Everything reachable from the keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline.
  • Buttons and links large enough to tap comfortably on a phone.
  • No content that flashes, and no animation that can't be switched off. If your device is set to reduce motion, the site respects it.
  • Forms with a label on every field and error messages that say what to fix.

The PDF edition

The PDF edition of Color My World, Please is the printed book's layout as a file. It hasn't been tagged for screen readers yet, so headings and images may not read in order. If it doesn't work with your screen reader, tell me within 14 days and I'll refund it. I'll update this page when a tagged version exists.

What I know about

Some parts of this site come from other companies and I can't change how they're built:

  • The shopping cart and checkout are provided by Squarespace, the platform the site runs on. Squarespace publishes its own accessibility information at squarespace.com/accessibility.
  • The Substack subscribe form embedded on the book page comes from Substack.

If any of these gives you trouble, email me and I'll take your order or subscription by hand.

The banner across the top of every page links to my Substack, but a screen reader announces that link without a name; it's part of the site's template, and the same Substack link is in the book page's 'A little reflection in your inbox' section.
